Program Description
Summer Search is a transformative program for young people who strive to break cycles of persistent poverty, make the transition into productive adulthood, and become the positive role models that their communities so critically need. The mission of Summer Search is to find resilient low-income high school students and inspire them to become responsible and altruistic leaders by providing year-round mentoring, life-changing summer experiences, college advising, and a lasting support network.

During high school, each Summer Search student receives a full scholarship to participate in two summer trips designed to broaden their world, open up the realm of possibility, teach them life skills, and help them realize their potential. Summer experiences occur after sophomore and junior years, and range from wilderness experiences, to educational enrichment programs, or international programs, community service in a developing country. Students have access to ongoing and individualized college advising support, as well as workshops designed to prepare them for college. This is critical as the majority of these students are first-generation college students. Summer Search alumni have access to life skill workshops, internships and ongoing support.

Organizational History
Summer Search was founded in 1990, by Linda Mornell, with the goal of offering low-income students summer scholarships to experiential education programs. Since then, Summer Search has grown into a comprehensive program that serves students throughout high school and their college years. Initially operating in San Francisco, the North Bay region of San Francisco, and Boston, Summer Search has grown to serve 955 current high school students and more than 1,700 alumni. Over the past five years, four new program sites have been launched in New York City, Seattle, Silicon Valley, and Philadelphia.

Partners and Supporters
Summer Search has valued partnerships with high school referral partners in each site area and with over 100 summer programs. Summer Search is founded through private donors, grants and foundations. Summer Search is also grateful for their continuing and growing relationships with many college admissions friends over the years. Further information on our partners can be found at www.summersearch.org.
